Why I gave essential oils a second change. (Or really, why I gave them a first chance to start with.)

I wasn’t a fan when I was first told about essential oils helping with health goals. I thought they smelled nice, but that was it.

A family member had started using oils and she wanted me to try them for my stomach discomfort. You guys, she wanted me to put an oil on my toe to help my stomach.

I thought she was nuts.

But I tried it.

And it helped.

Which seemed strange. But it was enough to make me want to try a little more.

So she sat me down and asked me to write out my top three health priorities. Just three, and we could focus on those.

She gave me the recommendations, I got my oils, and I took my oils out to my ship.

Oh, I should probably mention I was living and working on tanker ships at the time. I was out to sea for long periods of time bringing supplies to the active duty military ships. I didn’t have great quality food (whatever they served in the galley was what I ate), and there were lots of not-so-great pollutants I was exposed to daily.

My First Oils

The first oils I started with were Lemon, Ylang Ylang and a grounding blend called Balance. I was looking for mood and sleep support especially. I was working 7 days a week doing shift work and I craved rest.

Sleep Support

When I was working nights, I found after my shift I would struggle with settling in to get a restful nights sleep. My mind was still at work and even my go-to of reading wasn’t doing the trick.

I started using Ylang Ylang at bedtimes, rubbing a few drops over my heart. I would feel a calming effect as my body shifted into a place of rest. The soft floral aroma became a nightly reminder for my body that I had transitioned from work, to rest.

I was pleasantly surprised to find I wasn’t spending as much time waiting for sleep each night. And Ylang Ylang easily became part of my bedtime routine.

Mood Support

Listen, I was working so much that I once went 7 months with only 2 days off. I was working crazy schedules, missing out on family events, and running my body down.

To say I was moody some days would be an understatement.

So I started using Balance every day on the bottoms of my feet. I’d rub 5 drops on each foot at the start of my day.

And I was so surprised to discover the difference with simply rubbing something on my feet. It wasn’t complicated. It only took a minute. And it had a huge effect.

I felt so much more serene during my days. There was a balance to my moods. I wasn’t feeling big fluctuations anymore.

I wondered, What ARE these crazy oils? How are they working?

Digestion 

Much of our food underway was heavily processed and I wasn’t eating great. My digestion was unhappy.

I started using drop of Lemon in my water. Just a drop here and there in my glass of water throughout the day (always use glass, not plastics that can slowly dissolve when putting oils in your beverages).

This simple thing started to ease my discomfort. And I was hooked.

“Did you know these essential oils really work?!”

I came back from about a month out to sea, and there was a family party I was planning to attend.

I ran up to the woman who had gotten the oils for me and I was like, “Uhh, did you know these essential oils really work?!”

She laughed.

And so I gushed about all the positive changes I’d seen in such a short time. I wanted to try other things. What else could they work on?

My Husband’s First Oils

My husband had recently had back surgery and was looking for ways to support his muscles. I still remember telling him we should try some oils on him and he was like, “You mean those snake oils?”

That was basically our view of essential oils when we got started.

Just a placebo. Nothing that actually worked.

But he still gave them a try. And I remember after I rubbed some oils over his achy muscles, how he turned his head around, looking perplexed, and said, “Hey, that feels like it’s actually helping.”

And then that oil blend quickly became his most-used product. And it’s been that way for over 5 years now.

Toxic Products Replaced

Now that I’ve replaced so many of my personal care products with essential oils, I don’t even remember what I did before them. You guys, it’s so easy to have a bottle of oil on hand to grab when you need it.

It’s pennies per drop and you never need much.

I have almost zero toxic chemicals in my home. No fumes from harsh cleaners, no hormone disrupters in my personal care products, no aluminum in my deodorant. I have gentle and natural options for my husband and daughter.

Oh, and I used my new-found love of natural products to support fertility. But I’ll save that story for another post. 🙂
